Following the success of Round I, Round II of the internship initiative under the Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme (PMIS) has offered 1,19,158 internships across 735 districts with participation from 327 reputed companies. Opportunities span diverse sectors such as automobile, travel and hospitality, banking and finance, manufacturing, metals and mining, FMCG, etc, catering to candidates from various educational backgrounds.
As per the data available on the PM Internship website (as on May 15, 2025), Tamil Nadu has emerged as the top performer, accounting for 13.25 per cent of the total internship opportunities, offering 15,785 positions under the scheme. Close on its heels is Maharashtra, contributing 12.75 per cent of the total with 15,187 internships, followed by Gujarat with 11,672 positions, making up nearly 9.80 per cent of the nationwide total.
Karnataka also made a strong showing, offering 9,928 internships (8.33 per cent), reflecting the State’s robust industrial base and high youth engagement. These States together represent a significant chunk of the nationwide effort to equip young Indians with industry-ready skills. The selection and screening process has started for this round.
The data underscores a clear regional trend: industrially developed and urbanised States are providing a higher number of internship opportunities, likely due to the presence of established corporate ecosystems and active participation from industry partners.
“While the scheme’s early implementation showcases promising momentum, a more equitable distribution of opportunities in the coming phases, especially to underrepresented states and rural regions, to ensure inclusive national development will help he youth” says entrepreneur P P Pawar.
First Pilot Phase
Between October and December 2024, the Prime Minister Internship Scheme completed its first round of the pilot phase, registering impressive achievements. More than six lakh applications were received from enthusiastic youth across the country. In response, 1.27 lakh internship opportunities were posted by 280 top companies, covering 745 districts.
These opportunities spanned over 25 sectors, including banking, FMCG, automotive, energy, and others, highlighting the diverse industry participation. The pilot phase culminated with over 82,000 internship offers made to candidates.
The Scheme
India is on the brink of harnessing its demographic dividend, with a rising youth population ready to propel the nation’s development. Recognising this transformative potential, the Government of India launched the Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme (PMIS) on October 3, 2024.
The initiative aims to offer one crore young Indians a 12-month paid internship in leading companies across the country over the next five years. Designed to bridge the gap between academic education and industry needs, PMIS blends classroom learning with hands-on experience.
