Russia says several military aircraft caught fire after alleged large-scale Ukrainian drone attack: Report

Russia-Ukraine War Update: Russia reportedly said on Sunday that several of its aircraft were on fire after an alleged “large-scale” Ukrainian drone attack, according to news agency AFP.  Russia said that the Ukrainian drone attack targeted four of its airbases. Moscow also said that 40 of Russian aircraft were targeted by what was reportedly being dubbed one of Kyiv’s largest operation amidst the ongoing war between the two countries till date.

Russia’s defence ministry took to microblogging platform Telegram to state that the drone attack targeted the following areas:

  • Murmansk
  • Irkutsk
  • Ivanovo
  • Ryazan
  • Amur

The latest escalation in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine back in February 2022, comes on the eve of scheduled peace talks between both sides. 

The news comes amid growing uncertainty between both sides with Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov set to engage in direct peace talks with Russian officials in Istanbul on June 2. 

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has urged both sides to end their conflict, warning of walking away if they don’t. The American President has called Putin “crazy” in the past and also berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at a televised meeting hosted in the Oval Office in the White House in February.
