Bayern Munich’s Christoph Freund is convinced Dayot Upamecano “will overcome” this bad phase

Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano is having a difficult time right now, but he started the season in a really strong fashion. Coming off the back of a poor patch of form to end the season, he formed a partnership with Kim Min-jae that ousted Matthijs de Ligt from a starting position and retained his spot despite injuries for the majority of the season.

Then it happened again: Rushed back from an injury, Upamecano suffered against Bayer Leverkusen before earning two straight red cards against Lazio in the Champions League and Bochumk in the Bundesliga. Since then, he has been unable to win back his spot in the starting lineup. What now?

Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund believes that, right now, what the former RB Salzburg player needs is some support. As reported by Abendzeitung and captured by @iMiaSanMia, Freund said this: “He’s not in the rhythm, but Dayot has also played some good games,” Freund stated. “It’s certainly not an easy situation for him, but he’s a great character, a great professional and I’m convinced he’ll overcome this.”

Freund, of course, already knew Upamecano from their shared time at RB Salzburg and has been reunited with him at Bayern. Freund knows what the club has in Upamecano and seems to believe it is enough to thrive in Munich. Whether the fanbase is convinced or can still be convinced is another matter entirely.
