Vanessa Bryant honors Caitlin Clark’s Mamba Mentality with surprise gift to Iowa team

Caitlin Clark is reaching the point in her career where she is a star in the eyes of the legends she looked up to. There was the joyful meeting with Maya Moore before one of her last home games. Now there is Kobe Bryant’s wife, Vanessa, passing her the torch of the Mamba himself by showering her Iowa Hawkeyes team with gifts.

Caitlin Clark’s connection to Kobe Bryant

In addition to her elite offensive game for a team that wears gold, the Iowa guard shares Bryant’s signature trait: the Mamba Mentality.

After losing in last year’s national championship game, dealing with a never-before-seen wave of media attention, and facing heightened scrutiny over her show of emotions so far in the NCAA Tournament, Clark’s steely poise and will to win never wavered.

Recreating Kobe’s iconic photo

Clark caused a stir when she recreated Kobe’s famous photo with the Larry O’Brien trophy earlier this month, but it was a sign of respect toward the NBA icon who she loved.

“It’s an opportunity to pay homage to one of the greatest basketball players of all time, and Kobe was also a huge supporter of women’s sports and women’s basketball specifically,” the photographer who snapped the photo later told ESPN. “That tie in there is really special.”

What Kobe shoes does Caitlin Clark wear?

She also wears his shoes. She had on Mambacitas when she broke the all-time NCAA assist record on February 11, followed by breaking the NCAA scoring record four days later in the Kobe 5 “Bruce Lee” edition kicks.

It’s fitting that Clark and her Iowa teammates each received a pair of new Kobes from Vanessa, ensuring the Hawkeyes are geared up for the Sweet 16. But something tells us Caitlin already had a pair ready to go.
