Northwestern lacrosse earns NCAA Tournament’s No. 1 seed

No. 1 Northwestern garnered the selection committee’s top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season Sunday night. 

With the No. 1 seed, coach Kelly Amonte Hiller’s team will have home-field advantage at Martin Stadium until the Final Four in Cary, North Carolina. Her squad has made at least a semifinal appearance in every season since 2019.

This marks the Lake Show’s second No. 1 seed since 2009, and Amonte Hiller will be keen to pick up a record ninth national title this May.

The Wildcats (15-2, 5-1 Big Ten) won their second consecutive Big Ten Tournament championship Saturday night, defeating Penn State in a 14-12 tilt that took place both outside and inside Ryan Fieldhouse due to inclement weather.

NU will face the winner of Denver and Stanford in Sunday’s second round. 

Graduate student attacker Izzy Scane is just one goal away from breaking former Duke and Boston College attacker Charlotte North’s career goals record (358) and will likely set a new highmark in her next game at Martin Stadium.

The ’Cats faced two automatic qualifiers, Denver and Boston College, during the regular season and matched up with PAC-12 champions Stanford in a preseason scrimmage. A 2023 national championship rematch with the Eagles could only occur on Championship Sunday once again, as ACC champions Boston College took the tournament’s No. 2 seed.
