From those loud Kim Kardashian boos to his Gisele reactions, here are 5 things you didn’t see on TV
Tom Brady agreed to be roasted for Netflix’s The Greatest Roast of All Time, but there’s no way he was prepared for some of the NSFW content that came out of the three-hour live special.
Hosted by Kevin Hart, the event was part of the Netflix is a Joke festival, and took place on Sunday at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, Calif. Bill Belichick, Ben Affleck and Kim Kardashian were among the famous roasters and no topic was off-limits — OK, just one topic — as Brady heard relentless jokes about his marriage to Gisele Bündchen, deflategate, his looks and much, much more.
Here are five things you didn’t see on TV from inside the Brady roast.
Brady uncomfortable, but good sport about Gisele jokes
Kevin Hart made it clear from the outset that Brady’s high-profile divorce from Bündchen was not going to be off-limits. Aside from Brady’s relationship with former coach Bill Belichick, it was one of the topics most roasted.
“The world knows that you left Bill Belichick high and dry, man… You know who else f***ed that coach? Gisele,” he said, referring to Bündchen’s reported relationship with their children’s jujitsu teacher, Joaquim Valente. “She f***ed that karate man.”
Brady took a sip (OK, a lot of sips) out of whatever he was drinking during this particular joke.
“I mean, Jesus Christ, Tom. One of the smartest quarterbacks ever played a game,” Hart continued. “How did you not see this coming? Eight f***ing karate classes a day.”
The comedian had some other jabs about Brady’s 13-year marriage that ended, but clearly Hart didn’t go too far in the quarterback’s mind. After Hart introduced Jeff Ross, who kicked things off on Sunday night, Brady leaned over to Hart and gave him a “no hard feelings” pat on the back and whispered something in his ear.
The NSFW Gisele joke that had Brady mouth “oh my God” came courtesy of Ross. (“You really put the j*** in Gisele.”)
There was one topic that really irked Brady
Speaking of Ross, he’s the only one who seemingly went too far in Brady’s mind — but it wasn’t about the athlete’s ex-wife. It was when Ross went after Patriots owner Robert Kraft.
“Tom became a Patriot, moved up to New England, and on the first day of training camp, that scrawny rookie famously walked into the owner Robert Kraft’s office and said ‘I’m the best decision your organization has ever made. Would you like a massage?'” Ross said, before turning to Kraft who was in the audience. (In 2019, Kraft was charged in a Florida sting aimed at breaking up prostitution rings at massage parlors.)
“I love Robert Kraft, I…” Ross said before Brady got up and whispered something in his ear: “Never say that shit again.”
There was a dedicated camera inside the Kia Forum trained on Brady throughout the roast, and it was clear the seven-time Super Bowl champ thought the massage joke was off-limits. There were multiple teleprompter’s set up for roasters, so there’s a chance Brady caught a look at where Ross was about to go and didn’t like it.
Brady wasn’t having Kim Kardashian getting booed
The boos inside the theater when Kardashian took the stage were even louder than you heard. But it was clear Brady wanted the audience to cool it, as he kept clapping for the reality star when she was up there. Kardashian seemed surprised by the prolonged negative reaction she received when she began her roast but ultimately powered through and won some people over as she poked fun at last year’s dating rumors. But the audience was still pretty brutal whenever she was shown onscreen.
When Brady took the podium at the end of the night, he had an opportunity to respond to everyone who roasted him, including Kardashian. When the camera flashed to her in the audience, the boos started up once again, but quickly turned to laughs as Brady delivered one of his biggest zingers of the night.
“I know Kim was terrified to be here tonight … not because of this but because her kids are at home with their dad,” he said.
Guests were told to leave ‘cancel culture’ sensitivity at the door
Fifteen minutes before the show kicked off, comedian Alonzo Bodden got the audience warmed up. He also gave everyone fair warning the content was not going to be PG.
“At a roast, they are gonna go hard at Tom,” he explained, telling everyone they were going to hear “inappropriate shit” and “your job is to laugh.”
“I don’t want to hear none of that cancel culture bullshit,” he added.
It’s safe to say the audience was up for it — for all three hours.
Nikki Glaser gets first standing ovation of the night as standout roaster
The comedian delivered a perfect roast, as Hart declared, even though she had Brady squirming at moments. Glaser was the first one to go after the quarterback for leaving Bridget Moynahan for Bündchen.
“Tom, you’re the best to ever play for too long. I mean, you retired, then you came back and then you retired again. I mean, I get it. It’s hard to walk away from something that’s not your pregnant girlfriend [Bridget Moynahan],” Glaser said. (Brady kept a somewhat serious look on his face for that one.) “To be fair, he didn’t know she was pregnant. He just thought she was getting fat and Tom hates fat.”
Brady hugged Glaser when she was done with her roast and the audience gave her an equally warm embrace as she the whole auditorium got to their feet.
